.IX Header "DESCRIPTION"
This package provides several mail related utility functions. Any function
required must by explicitly listed on the use line to be exported into
the calling package.
.SH "FUNCTIONS"
.IX Header "FUNCTIONS"
.IP "\fBmailaddress\fR" 4
.IX Item "mailaddress"
Return a guess at the current users mail address. The user can force
the return value by setting the \s-1MAILADDRESS\s0 environment variable.
.Sp
\&\s-1WARNING:\s0
When not supplied via the environment variable, <mailaddress> looks at
various configuration files and other environmental data. Although this
seems to be smart behavior, this is not predictable enough (\s-1IMHO\s0) to
be used. Please set the \s-1MAILADDRESS\s0 explicitly, and do not trust on
the \*(L"automatic detection\*(R", even when that produces a correct address
(on the moment)
.Sp
example:
.Sp
.Vb 2
\& # in your main script
\& $ENV{MAILADDRESS} = 'me@example.com';
.Ve
.Sp
.Vb 3
\& # everywhere else
\& use Mail::Util 'mailaddress';
\& print mailaddress;
.Ve
.IP "\fBmaildomain\fR" 4
.IX Item "maildomain"
Attempt to determine the current uers mail domain string via the following
methods
.RS 4
.IP "* Look for the \s-1MAILDOMAIN\s0 enviroment variable, which can be set from outside the program. This is by far the best way to configure the domain." 4
.IX Item "Look for the MAILDOMAIN enviroment variable, which can be set from outside the program. This is by far the best way to configure the domain."
.PD 0
.IP "* Look for a sendmail.cf file and extract \s-1DH\s0 parameter" 4
.IX Item "Look for a sendmail.cf file and extract DH parameter"
.IP "* Look for a smail config file and usr the first host defined in hostname(s)" 4
.IX Item "Look for a smail config file and usr the first host defined in hostname(s)"
.IP "* Try an \s-1SMTP\s0 connect (if Net::SMTP exists) first to mailhost then localhost" 4
.IX Item "Try an SMTP connect (if Net::SMTP exists) first to mailhost then localhost"
.IP "* Use value from Net::Domain::domainname (if Net::Domain exists)" 4
.IX Item "Use value from Net::Domain::domainname (if Net::Domain exists)"
.RE
.RS 4
.PD
.Sp
\&\s-1WARNING:\s0
On modern machines, there is only one good way to provide information to
this method: the first; always explicitly configure the \s-1MAILDOMAIN\s0.
.Sp
example:
.Sp
.Vb 2
\& # in your main script
\& $ENV{MAILDOMAIN} = 'example.com';
.Ve
.Sp
.Vb 3
\& # everywhere else
\& use Mail::Util 'maildomain';
\& print maildomain;
.Ve
.RE
.IP "\fBread_mbox\fR(\s-1FILE\s0)" 4
.IX Item "read_mbox(FILE)"
Read \s-1FILE\s0, a binmail mailbox file, and return a list of references.
Each reference is a reference to an array containg one message.
.Sp
\&\s-1WARNING:\s0
This method does not quote lines which accidentally also start with the
message separator \f(CW\*(C`From\*(C'\fR, so this implementation can be considered
broken. See Mail::Box::Mbox
